All of our gold charms, pendants, earrings and some findings are handmade in Vancouver BC Canada. Some findings and chains are sourced from wholesale suppliers.

Bail or Top Rings

Our standard top jump ring for a gold charm is soldered closed with a 5mm outer diameter, and a 3.5mm internal diameter, making these charms able to slide over many existing chains.

Gold Pricing

Our gold is priced based on several factors.

  • The weight of gold is a major factor, but it is not the only factor. Some pieces require shipping back and forth numerous times, some require specialized machinery and training, some require many hours of labour. Some special materials require importing which incurs duties, brokerage fees and tariffs on top of shipping fees. And many of our most unique pieces require all of those.
  • Our 30 years of experience, skills and processes are the reason these pieces exist. These are not mass produced, each piece is made by hand and goes through many stages.
  • Keep in mind that gold in an investment. The price of gold fluctuates, but over the long term, the value goes up.

Gold Color

We use a recycled 14 karat yellow gold alloy that is consistent to our pieces, and comes from a single source. Rose gold, White gold, and 18k Yellow Gold are available by special request only, and we do not keep them in stock.

Not all yellow gold is the same, and it can indeed yellow gold can exhibit varying shades of green, bright to pale yellow or even hints of pink. This variability arises from several factors, primarily the alloy composition and manufacturing processes used. Even though 14k yellow gold jewelry is made from the same karat of gold, several factors can lead to differences in color.

Matching Your Existing Pieces

  • We cannot guarantee a match to your existing jewellery. We have no way of knowing the alloy, manufacturing methods, level of tarnish and so on. Colors vary online as well, so in order to create a match we would need to see the piece in person beforehand, to see if our alloy will be a match.
  • We can match any of our handmade pieces, however, sometimes the finish needs to be refreshed. If you have had a piece for a long time and wearing it consistently, your finish may have been scratched or it may be a little tarnished. It is easy to restore the finish in precious metals, so for that reason, we can only promise to match an existing piece if we get it back so that we can make not only the karat and color of the gold match, but also match the current finish of both of the pieces.

Gold Chains

The solid 14k gold chains we supply are not made in our studio, we purchase the vast majority of them from Canadian wholesale suppliers. Due to the manufacturing processes used in creating these chains, the color may appear slightly different. We cannot guarantee an exact match, rather, these are the best color match, cost, and quality we can source to combine with our handmade jewellery. All of the jewellery pictured on the site shows the actual jewellery and actual chains.

Different manufacturing steps can affect the final color and finish of gold chains. The style of chain, heating techniques, surface treatments such as final plating or tarnish resistant coatings, casting and surface finishing can all have an affect on the final color.

Gold Finish

We offer a variety of finishes on our gold jewellery.

MATTE FINISH

Much of the jewellery we make at Luxe Design has a matte finish. A matte finish is a modern look in luxury gold, however, it is not a traditional look. The matte finish diffuses the light that reflects off of the surface of the gold and the result is a softer, brushed finish.

Best For:

  • Seeing fine detail. Because of the reduced reflections in a matte finish, it is easier to see tiny details like fingerprints and small lettering.
  • Modern, sophisticated styling. The matte finish is a non-traditional finish that can be minimal and interesting on gold.
  • Works well with oxidation. Oxidized or blackened finish is a chemical process used to force a dark tarnish into the fine lines and details of metal, then we use a matte polish to remove most of the black and this combination makes the details more visible.

Not Best For:

  • Color matching. When the same piece of gold jewellery is matte finished or shiny finished, the matte finish tends to look slightly less yellow due to the way the surface reacts to the light. A Shiny surface will reflect the colors around it, so it tends to appear to be a closer match to the chains or other charms around it.

Long Term Care:

If matte finish jewellery comes into constant contact with hard surfaces, it may lose its finish over time. Fine jewellery needs to be cared for, and a matte finish can be easily restored. Deeper scratches and dents due to wear and tear may need professional refinishing. See More Here: Care and Cleaning.

SHINY FINISH

Gold traditionally has a high gloss finish which highlights its beauty and color.

Best For:

  • Classic Style. If you prefer a more traditional, classic look for your gold pieces, the shiny finish is ideal.
  • Heavy Duty Wear. If your jewellery will come into contact with hard surfaces such as other charms and jewellery, counters, zippers, etc., the shiny surface will be more resilient and hide imperfections longer.

Not Best For:

  • Seeing Fine Detail: Reflections around tiny detail make things harder to read or see.
  • Oxidized Finishes. the process of creating a shiny finish pulls out any blackening or oxidation used to enhance detail.

Long Term Care:

The shiny finish on fine jewellery may dull over time and with regular wear and tear. A shiny surface may be easily restored, fine scratches and dents may need to be professionally refinished. See More Here: Care and Cleaning.

We stamp our gold jewellery with a karat stamp and trademark stamp to guarantee its authenticity.
